South Africa’s national women’s football team got their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign off to a good start on Monday (7 July).

The reigning champions secured a confident 2–0 win over Ghana in their Group C opener in Morocco.

Goals from Linda Motlhalo and Jermain Seoposenwe in the first half were enough to seal the victory.

Coach Desiree Ellis was pleased with the team’s performance, IOL reports:

“It was definitely hot out there - not only the weather, but on the pitch as well,” she said during the post-match press conference.

“Defensively, we were really sound… Our whole team played very well defensively. But it was extremely hot out there, so I think the cooling was welcome.”
