Johannesburg audiences are being captivated by Aldo Brincat’s The Moon Looks Delicious From Here, now showing at the Market Theatre.

The award-winning solo show explores identity, heritage, and sexuality through the lens of a father-son relationship.

It's been hailed as a 'masterclass in writing and performance' and has bagged Brincat several awards, including the Standard Bank Silver Ovation Award at the 50th National Arts Festival in Makhanda, and the Special Jury Award at London’s Bitesize Theatre Festival.

Brincat says it is a timely intersectional work with relevant themes for our current sociopolitical context.

"Through the play I hope that people can have a beautiful reminiscing about their heritage and their history and their place in the world."
- Aldo Brincat, Playwright

The play also focuses on the father-son dynamic, and it's one that Brincat knows well.

He says his relationship with his own father, who came to South Africa from Malta, was a big force in his life.

"A lot of my world view was shaped by him... that father-son relationship drives the play."
- Aldo Brincat, Playwright

The Moon Looks Delicious From Here is directed by Sjaka Septembir, with music by internationally-renowned singer and songwriter, Bongeziwe Mabandla.

"Bongeziwe is a friend of my husband and when we were putting the show together, there's a particular track [of his] which is so exquisite... so we approached Bongeziwe and asked him if we could use it for the production."
