Nobuhle Nkabane has been fired as Minister of Higher Education and Training after allegedly lying to parliament about cadre deployment.

The DA had threatened to vote against the upcoming Higher Education budget if Nkabane was not dismissed.

This also comes ahead of the vote on the Appropriations Bill planned for Wednesday.

Wiener notes that there have been suggestions that Nkabane was removed so the DA would vote in favour of this bill, helping it to pass.

However, Ntuli says this is not the case and her removal is based on whether President Ramaphosa felt she could remain in the role.

He adds that the ANC is convinced that the DA and all other parties in the GNU will support this bill.

“I think all of us are beginning to recognise that the country must come first and we have to find a way for the country to succeed despite our internal contradictions.”
