CAPE TOWN - Gun violence persisted in Cape Town this weekend despite the launch of the #SilencetheGun campaign in Manenberg.

The campaign aims to tackle the high gun violence in the Nyanga sub-district by, among other things, encouraging community members to report crimes.

But gun-related crimes were reported in Manenberg, Bishop Lavis.

A 40-year-old woman was shot an hour after the campaign’s launch in a drive-by shooting in Manenberg.

Chairperson of the Nyanga sub-district Martin Makasi, said these crimes are due to the over-saturation of illegal firearms in the area.

"We were not surprised that there are shootings over the weekend because there was never any illusion on our part that because we're going to speak about it, it's going to stop. But it assists us in terms of elevating what we have been highlighting as a main concern.”
