Botched robbery in Cape Town results in death of assailant: SAPS

A botched robbery attempt has resulted in the death of a man in Athlone.

During the early hours of Thursday morning, three armed men approached a security guard near Hadjie Ebrahim Crescent.

It is alleged that they started arguing when they tried to rob the security officer of his firearm.

The security guard then responded by firing shots at them, wounding two of the men.

Police spokesperson Joseph Swartbooi said that while being transported to hospital, one of the suspects died.

“The third male fled the scene in an undisclosed direction and, in the process, dropped a firearm, which was recovered upon arrival of the police members on the scene. The motive for this attack is robbery. Athlone police are investigating cases of murder and attempted murder.”
