DCS investigating circumstances around attack at Pollsmoor Prison that left 2 inmates dead

The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) says all necessary measures are being taken to ensure the safety and stability of the correctional environment at Pollsmoor Prison.

This follows a violent attack, during which two inmates were killed on Wednesday.
 
The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) told EWN that two correctional officials were wounded.
 
The injured were taken to hospital for medical treatment.
 
The Department of Correctional Services said it will conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Wednesday's violence.
 
The department's Singabakho Nxumalo: "The incident involved a stabbing attack directed at correctional officials, prompting the use of force in an attempt to restore order."
 
Nxumalo said that the two inmates died during efforts to contain the situation.
 
National Correctional Services Commissioner, Makgothi Samuel Thobakgale, condemned the attack and expressed concern.

Calm has since been restored at the facility.
