Retired Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) deputy commissioner Revo Spies has called for EMPD officers to be subjected to lifestyle audits.

Spies has been testifying before the Madlanga Commission since Friday last week and continued on Monday, claiming the officers have been identified in many criminal matters with little to no repercussions.

Revo Spies said some EMPD officers are living beyond their means, raising questions about how they fund their lavish lifestyles.

Testifying before the Madlanga Commission, Spies, who is currently employed with Tshwane Metro Police, called for lifestyle audits of metro cops.

“You start looking at how officers live, they drive luxury vehicles, they live in luxury estates.”

He said current law allows for lifestyle audits to be conducted on municipal officials and not metro cops.

“That’s something that, according to me, needs to be made compulsory. You cannot be a law enforcement officer and not be vetted to do you work.”

Spies will continue with his testimony on Tuesday morning.
