South Africans are missing out on professional financial guidance because of a long-held belief that quality advice is only for the wealthy, says Rory Brachner, the founder and Managing Director of financial advisory service, Doshguide.

Brachner says that most traditional advisors only work with clients who have substantial investable assets, leaving many households without proper support.

According to the Momentum Financial Advice Research Report 2025, compiled with the Bureau of Market Research, only 9% of households use a certified financial advisor.

Brachner argues this is partly due to confusion between qualified financial planners and salespeople who earn commissions from selling insurance and investment products.

"It's actually only a small portion of people that have access to a proper, not a salesperson, but a proper financial planner, not just distributing products, but actually looking to improve your financial well-being and to really get into the details of understanding how to move you forward in terms of your financial life."

Brachner says professional advice can be far more affordable than people assume.

"If you think about the daily coffee habit that a bunch of us would have, where we're spending R30, R40 on a coffee and it's multiple times per week, and that sort of adds up through the month, and it could be as much as R500, R1000 per month. I think that's probably about a reasonable amount to be paying for a professional, and I'm talking about not just a salesperson, but an actual professional who's going to be hand-holding you through making all the strategic decisions in your financial life and being your copilot on that course."
