As the festive season approaches, many South Africans are facing a challenging reality: navigating holidays after experiencing loss or significant life changes.
Kefilwe Mojapelo, a psychosocial wellbeing practitioner, says grief can intensify during a time that is usually associated with joy and family togetherness.
She highlights that losses, ranging from the death of loved ones to divorce or estranged relationships, can make returning home, emotionally difficult or even impossible.
Mojapelo stressed the importance of acknowledging emotions rather than avoiding them, warning against coping strategies such as excessive drinking or withdrawing.
"Sometimes the mind is so clever. It just wants to sweep it under the carpet. It's so real and so painful that I would rather not go there. I know personally that sometimes spaces where I don't want to confront my own feelings, but I've learned to really confront them, sit with them. Even if my mind is playing tricks on me, I've learned to step in that and be in that and allow myself to feel it. Process it, so that I can get some strength from that experience instead of avoiding it and finding other dysfunctional ways to deal with it."
She encouraged people to be mindful, deliberate, and intentional about how they spend this season, suggesting that personal rituals, reflection, and self-care can help manage grief and loneliness.
"It's about time that we really think of what this really means for us and how we want to spend it, particularly if you're anticipating being alone because of family conflicts or whatever. We can still have that beautiful festive on your own or find meaningful connections in other ways."
Mojapelo emphasised reimagining festive experiences, connecting with supportive friends or professionals if needed, and seeking bereavement guidance to navigate the season with care and resilience.
