Water and Sanitation Minister Pemmy Majodina, together with the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Velenkosini Hlabisa, are expected to join the Gauteng Premier and Joburg Mayor this afternoon to address residents’ frustrations over ongoing water outages in several Johannesburg neighbourhoods.
This comes after residents of Melville and surrounding areas took to the streets in protest against the lack of water, while more protests are expected in Emmarentia on Wednesday afternoon.
Joburg Mayor Dada Morero told journalists this morning that the interaction with communities is to try and restore public trust.
"Yes, it does reflect on the governing party as and when there are particular service challenges, but the ability to respond will help us to deal with what is called public trust," Morero said. "Going to communities will help us deal with public trust because we give an honest account of what has actually happened. We cannot hide and say the system did not collapse and give reasons that are not there."
