A 58-year-old church leader and politician facing charges for the kidnapping and rape of a 12-year-old girl has abandoned his bid for freedom.
The suspect made his second appearance in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, where it was confirmed he will remain in custody pending further legal proceedings.
He was arrested earlier this month after neighbours allegedly stormed his home shortly after the attack and alerted authorities. During Wednesday's appearance, his legal team formally withdrew his bail application.

The matter has been postponed to May 20 to allow the State to finalise its investigation. Prosecutors are currently compiling a comprehensive evidence docket, which reportedly includes:
CCTV and video footage from the day of the alleged assault
Formal witness statements
Forensic evidence gathered at the scene
Following the court proceedings, the grandfather of the 12-year-old victim, whose identity is being withheld to protect the minor, addressed the media.
He confirmed that the child has been discharged from the hospital and relocated to a secure environment.
“We didn’t want her to feel ashamed. To protect her from reliving the trauma, we moved her to a place where she can live and play with her age-mates. She is coping in school and happy.”
