The Forum for South Africa (FOSA), a civil society organisation, said that Freedom Day risks becoming a symbolic exercise for many South Africans.
The group said that while the day marks the country’s democratic breakthrough in 1994, the lived reality for millions is still defined by poverty, unemployment and deepening inequality.
FOSA argued that while political freedom has been achieved, economic freedom remains out of reach for the majority, with wealth and opportunity still concentrated in the hands of a few.
The organisation is calling on the government to move beyond rhetoric and take decisive action to address corruption, rebuild institutions and deliver meaningful change.
Leader Tebogo Mashilompane said, “Fosa firmly believes that the struggle for true freedom is far from over. The current generation faces a renewed fight not against Apartheid laws, but against economic exclusion, failed governance, and systemic corruption."
