Wildlife biologists in Michigan have removed a plastic lid that was stuck around the neck of a two-year-old male black bear for two years.

The cub was first spotted in 2023 with the lid around its neck but the Department of Natural Resources was unable to locate it again.

A breakthrough came in May when a resident spotted the bear, and the department set up a trap to catch him.

The black bear was captured on 2 June, given anesthesia to remove the plastic lid and the animal was treated for scarring and an infection.

“It’s the bad human, good end kind of story. I am pleased that they were able to save it even though humans caused the problem.”
