It was an emotional day for Cape Town City as the team was relegated from the PSL.
They went into the playoffs after finishing 15th in the Premiership.
The team will now play in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, where they will battle it out with 15 other teams for a chance to be promoted.
“We fell on the wrong side of a lot of things… It’s a series of things that possibly went wrong, but if I have to use luck as one of the elements in this game, we didn’t have any of it this season.”
– John Comitis, Chairperson – Cape Town City FC
“It was like putting oil with water… Whatever was needed, we brought it in, but nothing helped..."
– John Comitis, Chairperson – Cape Town City FC
Cape Town City was pushed into the playoffs after a critical fixture between SuperSport United and Golden Arrows was resumed three months later.
The game, which initially happened in February, was abandoned at 1–1 due to load shedding.
The remaining 45 minutes were played in May, and the game ended in a draw, knocking Cape Town City into the playoffs.
“... it was the wrong decision for football, but we’re not going to cry over spilt milk... Now we need to roll up our sleeves, suck it up and rebuild the club from the bottom up.”
– John Comitis, Chairperson – Cape Town City FC
