Cape Town’s Malikah Hamza has always loved sport.

While at school she played golf, soccer, netball and enjoyed swimming.

These days though, the 20-year-old Kensington athlete is focused on hockey, and currently plays professionally for German Bundesliga 1 side Harvestehuder.

But she has recently swapped her hockey stick for the written word, with the release of her first children’s book, Malikah - The Girl Who Loves Sport.

The book, written by Darryl Earl David and inspired by her father, was released in November.

With it, she says she hopes to inspire a new generation of young athletes.

"It's incredibly tough being a woman of colour playing in a white dominated sport."

"It's a series of books and the series will be the events of my life... true stories, different sporting codes, and how I've overcome certain challenges."
