CAR SAFETY: Be smart about your keys
Insure your car key and make sure you have a spare one. Relebogile Mabotja interviews PSG Insure’s Ryno de Kock.
702's Relebogile Mabotja speaks to Ryno de Kock of PSG Insure about being more mindful of where you put your keys and who you give them to.
Listen below:
With 85 vehicles on average stolen per day in South Africa, it's important that you are cautious and take care of your valuable asset.
De Kock warns that being negligent with your keys can cost you dearly.
"... if you stop at a shop and you just leave your vehicle idling there, and someone climbs into your car and drives away. You know you didn't really take the necessary precaution, and an insurance company could walk away from your loss."
- Ryno de Kock, PSG Insure
De Kock explains that there's a term called 'Duty of Care' which refers to the responsibility of both the insurer and the insured to act in good faith, and to take reasonable steps to prevent and minimise any losses.
"You must almost act like you are not insured," explains De Kock.
"There are one or two cases currently in the media where vehicles have been taken from car washes. You know where there weren't proper processes and security measures in place. Where perpetrators basically just came and acted like they were the owners of the vehicles, and the keys were simply handed over."
- Ryno de Kock, PSG Insure
He says it's so important when you hand over your keys that you make sure security measures are in place and that there is a process where they can identify that you are the owner of this vehicle.
"Because in cases like this, where there was no duty of care taken, insurance companies may also not foot that bill."
De Kock also advises everyone to have a spare key for the vehicle and to ensure their keys, as they are costly to replace.
