CAPE TOWN - Concerns about child protection are back in the spotlight as the country marks Child Protection Month in May.
The latest worries come amid lingering questions about the whereabouts of little Joshlin Smith, who went missing more than a year ago.
The girl’s mother and her two co-accused Jacquen Appollis and Steveno van Rhyn were convicted of kidnapping and human trafficking last week.
The trio is expected to appear for sentencing proceedings in the Western Cape High Court this week.
The Democratic Alliance (DA)’s Wendy Kaiser said that more needs to be done to raise awareness about child protection.
"To parents and guardians, in particular, the duty of care is placed in your hands. The safety and well-being of our children begin at home, and your role is crucial in creating a nurturing and protective environment."
