JOHANNESBURG - City Power says it has restored over 60% power supply to residents and businesses in parts of the Joburg CBD after power was knocked out by an underground fire a week ago.

Sections of Raheema Moosa, formerly Jeppe Street, and Harrison Street were affected when a fire ripped through a tunnel.

It’s believed the fire may have been sparked by cable theft by illegal miners operating nearby.

City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena explained: “The following areas are now back on: Kerk East, Van Brondis, Jeppe, East Loveday, Pritchard, President, Newton Junction, New Stock Exchange. The areas below are off, but efforts are ongoing to reinstate supply: Bank City, Parts of Bree, Rahima Moosa, Sauer, Diagona,l De Villiers Jeppe.”
