Cold front hits Western Cape this weekend: Expect thundershowers, gale-force winds

The ‘biggest danger’ associated with this cold front will be the strong to gale North Westerly winds expected across the Cape Metro, says meteorologist Michelle du Plessis.

The first cold front of the winter season is set to hit Cape Town this weekend.

The temperature is set to drop from Friday evening (9 May) into Saturday morning as cloudy skies, thundershowers, and strong winds are expected.

Most of the rain is expected to fall over the mountainous regions of the Cape, such as the Cederberg and Boland mountains, which means Stellenbosch, Paarl and Somerset West will receive most of the rain, about 30 millimetres, says Du Plessis.

While some regions won't reach highs of 10°C this weekend, temperatures won't drop enough for snow, says Du Plessis.

Weather services have issued two yellow-level four weather warnings for damaging waves and winds around specific areas along the coast.

"We are looking at a significant cold front moving over the South Western Cape overnight into Saturday morning, but we can already feel that bite in the air as winter is closer."

"We currently have a yellow level four warning in place for damaging winds along the coast and the interior... and also a yellow level four warning for damaging waves along the Southern coastline between Plettenberg Bay and Table Bay."
