CapeTalk's Lester Kiewit speaks to CEO of Community Chest Peter Heeger.
Listen below:
This year, Community Chest is marking Mandela Day and beyond to give back with more than just 67 minutes.
They’ve launched a six-week pop-up kitchen outside their Bree Street offices, serving nutritious meals to the unhoused and vulnerable on Fridays from 11 July to 15 August.
On the menu today is smoortjie and soup.
With support from Pick n Pay, the initiative aims to provide warmth, dignity, and nourishment.
Community Chest does good every day by working with corporates to give back to those vulnerable in Cape Town, Heeger says.
The Community Chest envisions a world where all individuals and families achieve their human potential through access to world-class education, social and economic justice, income progress, and access to a healthy lifestyle through 'active citizenship' across all sectors of society.
"Maybe one day we can have a long table down Bree Street and all restaurants come aboard and we can invite all the homeless people throughout the City... it's a dream of mine. Every city has homeless people - apparently there are 14,000 homeless people in the centre of Cape Town."
- Peter Heeger, Community Chest CEO
