The digital migration includes replacing the outdated green barcoded ID books with smart ID cards, launching a Digital ID system with remote authentication and a digital wallet to store up to 15 official documents, and digitalising visas.
The plans also include partnerships with nearly 1,000 bank branches, where citizens will be able to access key civic services more conveniently.
Schreiber says many of these items are already in progress.
"These things are imminent... they're not just something 'down the road', and I think when people see that, they will see we are actually in gear and moving."
- Leon Schreiber, Minister of Home Affairs
Schreiber believes this digital transformation is not just about efficiency, but also about accountability and security.
He also acknowledges the frustrations that citizens are experiencing with the current systems that are not working properly, but says the digital reforms will provide proper long-term solutions.
"We've got a clear vision... technology should be the answer to most questions and problems that we have."
- Leon Schreiber, Minister of Home Affairs
