City of Ekurhuleni Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza survived a motion of no confidence brought against him during a tense sitting of the City of Ekurhuleni council in Germiston on Thursday.

Xhakaza overcame the attempt to remove him from office, with 140 councillors voting against the motion and 69 in support. 

On the motion against Xhakaza, the FF Plus cited ongoing service delivery challenges and alleged weak leadership.

The tracking of service delivery complaints:

"We are happy that we have been able to put up a system that tracks service delivery...it is just to ensure that the issues raised by communities, we don't leave them to depots, depot managers."

The reintroduction of community imbizos:

"We go to communities, we engage with them, because if we do not do that, you are not able to have a 360 type assurance that that which has been reported...has been resolved."

On improving the city's finances:

"You'll have heard of the R2 billion shortfall because of the systems that were deployed in the year before my leadership. We've be able to detect and actually prefer consequence management."

"We have begun now to turn around the tide. From quarter one, R2 billion we've taken it down to about R587 billion in  quarter two."
