Over 200,000 social grant recipients are under investigation for potentially having undisclosed additional sources of income.
Grant recipients have until the end of July to present their cases or risk having their grants permanently cancelled.
Depending on the circumstances they may also face charges of fraud.
Letsatsi says the social security agency has been working with the credit bureau and several banks to determine if beneficiaries have had a change in income.
When a person applies for a grant, there is a stipulation in the application that they must inform the agency if there are any changes in their financial situation.
“We thought that the beneficiaries would do the most honourable thing if they got employed and come forward."

If the additional income is an allowance from a child or grandchild Letsatsi says their grant will not be cancelled, provided they present their case to a SASSA office.
Recipients proving their case must bring their ID and three months bank statement to the office.
