Shope, fondly known as MaShope, died last week at the age of 99.

She's been remembered as a struggle icon, honoured alongside women like Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, for her role in the fight for a democratic South Africa.

Her granddaughter, Gomolemo Mafole, says Shope's unwavering love for the ANC, uMkhonto weSizwe, her country, and her family will never be forgotten.

"Rest in peace and power. I would like to add, the last time I was on this stage, I was receiving my master's, it was my master's graduation, and my grandmother had come to support me. She was so proud of me that day. And so as I stand on this stage again, I vow that I will continue to make her proud."
