Wasanga Mehana (in for Africa Melane on 702 and CapeTalk) speaks with Wayne Duvenage, CEO of the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA).
Listen below:
Nearly 700,000 driver's licence cards are delayed due to the failure of South Africa's only licence card printer.
This has left drivers facing fines for being caught without a licence through no fault of their own.
OUTA is calling for fines to be halted and for temporary licence requirements to be waived for these motorists.
Duvenage says it is unreasonable to expect motorists to get a temporary licence at their own cost when they have followed the correct process to replace their licence.
“It is a real problem for society when the government’s inefficiency creeps in to this extent. We are just asking the minister to do the right thing here.”

He adds that the government should extend the licence validity period to 10 years - the world average - as this could eliminate the backlog.
