Help South Africa's flag football team get to regional qualifiers in Cairo & LA Olympics
For the first time in history, flag football is coming to the Olympic Games — debuting at Los Angeles 2028.
CapeTalk's Lester Kiewit speaks to Dieter Eiselen, a South African National Football League (NFL) player serving as the NFL Africa Ambassador.

For the first time in history, flag football is coming to the Olympic Games — debuting at Los Angeles 2028.
South Africa has a shot to be there, if the team can manage to compete in the regional qualifier in Cairo this June, and then qualify for the 2026 World Championships.
Eiselen is leading the campaign on behalf of Gridiron South Africa, the official body for American flag football in our country.
The national team has qualified to compete in the IFAF Africa Continental Championship this June in Egypt — the only path to the 2026 World Championships, and ultimately the Olympics.
This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to represent South Africa, unite a nation through sport, and build something lasting for future generations of athletes.
The campaign, titled 'Cape to Cairo', is about giving young South African athletes — many from underserved communities — a chance to compete on a global stage, develop as leaders, and inspire pride in our flag.
The team needs to raise $25,000 by 20 June 2025, to:
- Cover team flights, accommodation, meals, and insurance.
- Fund training camps and equipment.
- Pay competition and registration fees.
- Support outreach clinics and youth development tied to the Olympic dream.
At the time of this interview, close to R60,000 has already been raised.

"We're looking for anyone to share in our vision and quest to go and represent South Africa..."
