Mondays = motivation with Kfm 94.5's Tracey Lange and Lucia Dramat, motivational speaker and author.

Today's topic? Wanting to make a change in your life... and actively making that change.

Dramat draws on American author Mel Robbins' concept of the '5 Second Rule' (not the one involving food on the floor) but rather, how this rule can be used to make things happen.

The secret to changing your life or setting your goals in motion isn't knowing what to do - it's knowing how to make yourself do it... which is possible in five seconds.

Dramat explains what it is and how to use it practically.

What is the '5 Second Rule'?

It's a technique to overcome hesitation and procrastination by taking action within five seconds of feeling an impulse to do something.

Our brains are wired to avoid discomfort and often lead to self-doubt, so acting quickly (for example, within five seconds) when motivated can help prevent negative thoughts from taking over and avoid being paralysed by inaction or overthinking.

You can use this rule and its countdown method to break any bad habit, interrupt self-doubt and negative self-talk, and push yourself to take the actions that will change your life.

This method helped Robbins go from bankruptcy to building a global brand.

How to apply the 5 Second Rule to daily life...

  • The countdown: when you feel an urge to act on a goal, count down from five to one. 5,4,3,2,1.
  • Immediate action: immediately after the countdown, take a small action that propels you towards your goal.

If you combine the two steps into action, it goes: 5,4,3,2,1 - MOVE!

Success isn’t about timing, it’s about momentum.

Stop waiting. Start doing. Break the hesitation habit, concludes Dramat.
