KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi alleges that the Political Killings Task Team was shut down for uncovering corruption.

He also suggests that arrested businessperson Vusi 'Cat' Matlala is influencing top cops, including Police Minister Senzo Mchunu.

In 2024, Matlala was awarded a R360-million police contract that has since been terminated.

The widow of SAPS Lieutenant Colonel Charl Kinnear, who was assassinated in 2020, believes his murder should be investigated as part of this probe.

“I absolutely support General Mkhwanazi. I absolutely support his desperate cry… The system is failing. It is a sinking ship.”

Kinnear was killed while investigating organised crime, including illegal firearm trafficking and police corruption.

No arrests have been made despite nine officers being linked to his death.

Nicolette Kinnear says she fundamentally believes that the policing and criminal justice system has been captured by organised crime.

“The top brass are definitely protecting each other, and we as South Africans are bleeding like teabags because we are faced with all the crime in the streets.”
