JOHANNESBURG - Members of the media are set to be briefed on Monday afternoon on the details of a judicial commission of inquiry probing criminality, political interference and corruption in the criminal justice system.

The commission was established by President Cyril Ramaphosa following explosive allegations of corruption and collusion in the justice system by KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

Acting deputy chief justice, Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, who was appointed to chair the inquiry, is expected to provide crucial details relating to the commencement of the commission.

Crucial details to be probed by the judicial commission of inquiry into the criminal justice system are expected to be provided during a press briefing hosted by Justice Madlanga in Sandton on Monday afternoon.

Madlanga, the acting deputy chief justice, was appointed to chair the highly anticipated commission of inquiry, by President Ramaphosa earlier in July.

The probe stems from a series of damning allegations made by Mkhwanazi into corruption and collusion within the criminal justice system, specifically in Gauteng.

Mkhwanazi made the allegations when he broke rank and held a media briefing in Durban on 6 July.

Last week, Ramaphosa set out the terms of reference of the commission, which will investigate eight state organs.

They include the SAPS, JMPD, EMPD, TMPD, the NPA, SSA, the judicary and the Department of Correctional Services.

Details about when the judicial commission is set to begin, the venue in which it will take place and the number of witnesses to be called to testify are expected to be shared with the media on Monday afternoon.
