Mandela Day: Nice Café hosts sober jol at dawn, entry fee was donations for a safe home

The rise of early morning sober raves, featuring alcohol-free beverages such as espresso shots with a vibe and lekker music is becoming a global trend - and it's reached Cape Town.

This Mandela Day morning, the city’s sober rave community came together from 7am to 8:07am for a special 67-minute jol at Nice Café in Church House in Victoria Street.

Early morning dancers brought along their entry fees, which was items such as toiletries and non-perishable food donations for Sisters Incorporated, a safe home for abused women and children.

Da Silva explains how the jol for Mandela on Mandela Day came about...

"We've decided to use the community we've built to do good with all the people who come through to have the best time of their lives... the entry fee is any donation you can bring, you can also donate to the organisation... it's all for a good cause while having a good time."
- Dylan Da Silva, Head of Food & Beverage - Neighbourgood & Nice
