JOHANNESBURG - An affidavit by the investigator in the Senzo Meyiwa trial has revealed how police knew in 2020 that the football star was murdered as a result of a contract killing and not a robbery gone wrong.

Brigadier Bongani Gininda is back on the witness stand, testifying on the confession statements made by two of the accused.

Five men stand accused of Meyiwa’s 2014 murder at the home of his girlfriend singer, Kelly Khumalo.

Gininda was reading an affidavit that he made when he was applying for a warrant of arrest for the accused.

"Investigation, which resulted in evidence under oath, revealed that the victim was murdered as a contractual assassination or hit, rather than a robbery or robbery gone wrong. Evidence under oath revealed that five suspects actively participated in the planning and execution of the contractual murder of Senzo Meyiwa."

This echoes the views of the lobby group AfriForum, which led this investigation before handing it over to the State.
