Former Transnet CEOs Brian Molefe and Siyabonga Gama were granted R50,000 bail each after appearing in court on Monday on charges of fraud and corruption.

They appeared alongside fellow accused, Anoj Singh and Thamsanqa Jiyane in the Johannesburg Specialised Commercial Crime Court, on charges stemming from their time at the state-owned entity.

Singh is the former Transnet Group chief financial officer and Jiyane was the chief procurement officer in the transport freight rail division at Transnet.

They're facing 18 charges, including fraud, corruption and violations of the Companies Act, in relation to a dodgy multi-billion rand locomotive tender.

The court postponed the matter to October 6 for further investigations.

Speaking to Stephen Grootes on The Money Show, Dr Iraj Abedian, CEO at Pan African Investments and Research Services says these developments are a major step towards exposing those who benefited from corruption.

"These three individuals have become the symbol of corruption and malfeasance in the state-owned enterprises."

"I'm absolutely sure they are not the only ones, but they were the most high profile in enabling the plundering of, not just money out of the country, but destroying the very important network industries or state-owned enterprises that Transnet is, as well as Eskom.

"These guys literally, like a wrecking ball destroyed the institutions. The massive underpinning of the economy, that the economy is suffering from it as we speak."

"I just hope the NPA has done it's job, that it's just not going to be another botched or somehow legally compromised process, because it's so important for our nation to see that even if it takes 12 years, 13 years, 14 years, at least this kind of undermining of national interest is brought to justice."
