Mpumalanga cops, intelligence net 95 Libyans allegedly running underground military camp

JOHANNESBURG – Members of the South Africa Police Service (SAPS) in Mpumalanga have arrested 95 Libyan nationals for allegedly running an underground military camp in the province.

The camp, situated at a farm in White River, was raided by police on Friday morning. 

SAPS national police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said the Libyans misrepresented themselves on their visa applications.

She said they claimed to be coming to South Africa to train as security guards.

To carry out the raid, SAPS members worked with the provincial joint structure and the Department of Home Affairs.

"We take any threat to the security and stability of our province and country very seriously," said acting provincial commissioner in Mpumalanga - Major General Mkhwanazi. 

"This operation demonstrates our commitment to acting swiftly and decisively against any activities that could undermine our national interests and ensure the safety of our citizens because that is our primary mandate."

The police are conducting further investigations to get to the bottom of the matter.

The SAPS have also assured the public that there has not been an immediate threat to community safety.
