Preparation and timing are the key to effective salary negotiations.
It starts by stating your case – why are you requesting an increase, and is it the right time?
“You believe that what you have achieved requires you to be compensated more than what you currently are because of your value, the skills that you have learned.”
– Boniwe Dunster, HR Specialist
By understanding the ‘why’, your research to support your request can begin.
Dunster recommends looking into the following points:
- Research the salary range for similar roles within the company, the industry and market at large
- Consider the company's financial situation/performance
- Highlight your achievements, areas where you went beyond and above
“[Preparation] also means standing in front of a mirror and talking to yourself, because often times it is a very scary process and people do get anxious.”
– Boniwe Dunster, HR Specialist
Remember that despite all of your research, the increase is not a guarantee.
Dunster recommends negotiating for other benefits, i.e., company shares, or a hybrid working model.
Also, enquire if the rejection can be renegotiated after six months or a year.
“Keep the lines of communication open… You put your line manager on the spot with accountability and ask, if you were to come back and request an increase after a year, what would you need to work on?”
