Universal Pictures have released a live-action reimagining of the film that launched the beloved How to Train Your Dragon franchise in 2010.

It follows the adventures of a young Viking called Hiccup, whose friendship with the mysterious Night Fury Toothless transformed society's relationship with dragons.

Critic Gayle Edmunds describes the live-action remake as 'a lovely family movie'.

And it's not just for the kiddies - Edmunds says her 16-year-old daughter thoroughly enjoyed it.

The only returning cast member is Gerard Butler, who plays the role of Viking chief Stoick, reprising his voice role from the animated films.

Hiccup defies centuries of tradition when he befriends Toothless, and their unlikely bond reveals the true nature of dragons.

"The film maintains the lovely messaging around compassion and that just because you've always done something the same way doesn't mean you couldn't look at a new way, so it sort of brings the Vikings and the dragons together."
