According to a recent study by the online driver education resource Zutobi, South Africa's roads rank among the most dangerous in the world.
In response to the country's road safety challenges, the Department of Basic Education (DBE), the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), and the National Education Collaboration Trust (NECT) have collaborated to integrate road safety education into the school curriculum.
"By embedding road safety education into the curriculum, South Africa takes a significant step toward institutionalising life-saving knowledge and cultivating a culture of road safety from a young age," RTMC said in a statement.
Efforts are also underway to train teachers and contextualise the materials to ensure they resonate with all pupils.
