The highly anticipated blockbuster, Superman, did not disappoint fans, and more so, it's raising awareness about dog adoption.
In addition to boosting the box office last weekend, Superman sparked serious interest in dog adoption, and we have Superman's Krypto to thank.
According to The Wrap, the dog training app Woofz saw a boost in Google searches for dog adoption. Some top searches after the movie's release include:
- 'Adopt Dog Near Me' — +513%
- 'Rescue Dog Adoption Near Me' — +163%
- 'Adopt a Schnuzer' — +299%
- 'Adopt a Puppy' — +31%
Leading up to the film's release on 11 July, Warner Bros. teamed up with Best Friends Animal Society and covered all pet adoption fees. In total, there were 454 pets adopted during this time across the United States.
In the movie, the duo save each other from certain doom, as shelter parents would know.
"When we take in a pet rescue, it's not just us rescuing them, but they rescue us too in our hearts, which I think is true," says Friedman.
"In the movie, Superman (David Corenswet) refers to Krypto as a 'foster situation', the meaning of which comes to light in the film’s last act after the duo save each other from certain doom. It speaks to the heart of the film, centring love for all living beings and just how amazing Krypto is at embodying that when he comes to the rescue. Shelter pet parents know that, as the saying goes, 'Who rescued who?' is such an understatement."

While adopting a rescue or 'foster situation' is highly encouraged over buying dogs from breeders, ensure you're doing it for the right reasons, notes Friedman.
"People online are saying it's beautiful and wonderful, but just remember when you adopt, don't just do it because it's a trend, make sure it's because you know you can give the pet a home forever..."

"I find it very sweet that this movie has got a little bit of a message about that and about us all helping each other and saving each other, animals and humanity."
