On Thursday, 31 July, Takalani Sesame celebrated an incredible milestone — 25 years on air! Since its very first episode over two decades ago, Takalani Sesame has pioneered a groundbreaking movement in children’s edutainment in South Africa.

In its first decade alone, the programme reached over 39 million viewers, not only entertaining but also educating, inspiring curiosity, and celebrating the richness of our country’s diversity. Beyond the laughter and learning for children, Takalani Sesame has also gained the trust of parents.

The programme is widely appreciated for providing practical, age-appropriate guidance on difficult topics such as HIV/AIDS, mental health, COVID-19, socio-emotional development, and more. As Payne reflects, Takalani Sesame “has been a household name for the past 25 years,” one that has made a lasting and meaningful impact on families across the nation.

"We couldn't be more proud and excited to be able to share this milestone with all of South Africa. We are extremely excited and looking forward to the next 25 years of impact... generations grew up on this show, it is a trusted wholesome brand - it's educational, entertaining, safe and so are so excited to share this milestone."
- Mari Payne, Deputy Managing Director and Senior Director Education and Programmes

Payne says the show's success lies in how Muppets are used strategically to address difficult topics with children and help them become kinder in understanding the world and their role in it.

"We do a lot of in-depth research and keep up with the times on what South African children really need."
- Mari Payne, Deputy Managing Director and Senior Director Education and Programmes

Payne explains that upcoming content focuses on digital well-being and its impact on children, how parents can keep their kids safe online, sexual abuse, and practical guidance as the world continues to rapidly advance in technology.
