A group of girls aged 13 to 15 were arrested on Sunday after a video of them assaulting a young girl went viral.
One of the girls in the video said that she would hit the victim ‘until the video trends’ and then would do it again, while the others laughed.
The police were reportedly able to track down the seven perpetrators after the video was widely shared.
National Police Commissioner Gen Fannie Masemola has warned that bullying, even by minors, has serious consequences.
They have been charged with common assault.
Omar says this footage is horrific and speaks to a disturbing culture of violence that is shaping the behaviour of certain young people.
“... there seems to be no empathy, no regret, no remorse.”
