Male baboon captured in Cape Town's southern suburbs
A young male Chacma baboon that was on the loose in Cape Town's southern suburbs over the weekend has been safely captured and released back into the wild.
The dispersing baboon was caught after what was 'a tense day of tracking and multiple evasions', the Cape of Good Hope SPCA reported on Saturday.
Working together with the Cape Baboon Partnership and a wildlife veterinarian, they managed to dart the animal after returning to the area around Claremont where he'd spent the previous night.
The baboon was given a full health check before being released into his natural roaming territory in the Tokai area.
Here he has the best chance of integrating with a troop and continuing his natural dispersal journey, the animal welfare group said.
"Tokai offers space, cover, and the presence of multiple baboon troops - giving him real options and a real shot at a life in the wild, where he belongs."

"Our teams... stayed with him from first sighting to final release. Because when an animal needs help, we don’t just respond - we stay, until we know they’re OK."

The SPCA has urged the public not to make an approach if they see a wild animal in distress, but to contact the organisation at 021 700 4158/9.
