The eThekwini Metro Municipality has announced its plans to build an amusement park on the promenade at the beachfront. This will replace the 75-year-old amusement park that was closed on 1 May 2023.
The new project will cost R1 billion and will feature more joyrides along the beachfront.
The attractions will include a lightning roller coaster, Disco 24, a vertical swing and a 1,500-square-metre virtual reality theme park with more than 160 interactive games and global e-sports activations.
According to the eThekwini Metro, the project will create around 500 construction jobs and 900 permanent positions in hospitality and technical services.
Mayor Cyril Xaba and Municipal Manager Musa Mbhele said the development will significantly contribute to the coastal city’s economy.
They expect the project to be completed by the end of 2027 and hope that it will lead to tourists choosing Durban as a preferred destination.
