Celebratory videos of the Proteas and South African Test captain Temba Bavuma are going viral following the Proteas’ historic victory over Australia in the 2025 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final at Lord’s on Saturday, 14 June.
The landmark win not only elevated South African cricket to new heights but also cemented Bavuma’s place among the game’s elite leaders, joining legendary names like Ricky Ponting, Percy Chapman, and Warwick Armstrong.
Chasing a challenging target of 282 runs in the fourth innings, South Africa pulled off a remarkable five-wicket victory, thanks to Bavuma’s gritty 66 and Aiden Markram’s superb 136. The triumph marks just the second ICC trophy in South Africa’s cricketing history, their first since winning the ICC KnockOut Trophy (now Champions Trophy) back in 1998.
In doing so, Bavuma achieved a rare feat unmatched in over a century of Test cricket.
The victory in the WTC final was his ninth win in just 10 Tests as captain, with the remaining match ending in a draw. This record makes him the most successful Test captain in his first 10 matches. While England’s Percy Chapman also recorded nine wins in his first 10 Tests in 1926, he had one loss, placing Bavuma alone at the top of this historic list.
With this triumph, Bavuma has etched his name in the annals of cricket history, becoming the first captain to lead South Africa to a World Test Championship title and ending a 27-year wait for an ICC trophy.
Many viral videos of South Africa's epic victory are doing their rounds online.
Friedman highlights two: one shows Bavuma with his son holding the ICC WTC trophy, and the other shows the Proteas team celebrating their captain in style with a catchy song which goes:
"His name is Temba🥶
He comes from Langa❣️
He came to score
came to score
came to score
score score score..🎊
His name Bavuma
He comes from Langa
And he play for Proteas🔥"
