As the seasons change, so do your skin’s characteristics.
The cold weather can leave your skin feeling drier and uncomfortable.
This is due to an increase in your transepidermal water loss, the process where water passively evaporates from the skin’s surface to the surrounding atmosphere.
Thus, it is important to customize your routine accordingly.
“Because our skin is now exposed to more heated environments because we bring in components like heaters, dry environments, we actually make it so much worse.”
– Dr Judey Pretorius, founder – Biomedical Emporium
Pretorius recommends exfoliating regularly, particularly with chemical exfoliates which are easier to use at home.
And don’t forget your sunscreen, yes, even in winter.
“I would like to encourage people to look at the ingredients of the sunscreen. Sometimes we really love to buy these beautiful sunscreens… but what your skin wants in a sunscreen with ingredients like zinc and titanium.”
– Dr Judey Pretorius, founder – Biomedical Emporium
Her recommended three-step process is as follows:
- AM: cleanser with a chemical exfoliate, a serum such as vitamin C, and a moisturiser with an SPF
- PM: gentle cleanser, serum such as retinol and a moisturiser
You can also essentially eat your skincare by opting for anti-inflammatory foods, cutting down on sugar, and keeping up with your water intake.
