John Maytham interviews Werner Voigt, Curator of Kirstenbosch Gardens.
Listen below.
Over the years, Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden visitors have witnessed signs of neglect, such as dried-out plant beds, litter, and unkempt lawns.
This has left them hesitant to showcase this once-beautiful tourist attraction to international guests, as it no longer reflects the charm of Cape Town, shares Maytham.
Voigt acknowledges that the garden has fallen short of the standards it is known for and loved by visitors.
However, he emphasises that significant improvements have been made over the last three to four months.
While not offering any excuses, Voigt attributes the current state of Kirstenbosch Gardens to the impact of Covid-19, shifts in climate, and challenges in hiring new staff.
He reassures the public that these issues are actively being addressed and sees this as a learning opportunity for the team.
Voigt anticipates a noticeable transformation by August or September, assuring visitors that the necessary steps are being taken to restore Kirstenbosch Gardens to its former glory.
"Whilst I agree that the standard, just in terms of maintenance, hasn't been up to the standard that people have gotten used to, that has changed in the last three months or so."
