JOHANNESBURG - African National Congress (ANC) President Cyril Ramaphosa said splinter parties formed by disgruntled former leaders would not succeed in eroding the party’s support.

The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party, backed by suspended former ANC President Jacob Zuma, is the latest organisation formed outside of the governing party.

Former ANC veterans Carl Niehuas and Ace Magashule, expelled from the party, also started their own political parties after leaving it.

Speaking at the closing of the ANC's lekgotla on Tuesday, Ramaphosa said the ANC remained the only party capable of improving the lives of all South Africans.

"Often these groupings start as small factional groups within the ANC, but when the movement pushes back, they mutate into opposition parties.

"Some of these parties masquerade as more radical than the ANC, but their revolutionary-sounding rhetoric cannot hide the fact that they have a common cause with the forces opposing transformation."
