JOHANNESBURG - The funeral service of Rand Water executive Teboho Joala is underway on Sunday morning.

Joala was killed in a brazen hit in full view of hundreds of primary school pupils at a donation event hosted by Rand Water at Zakariyya Park Civic Hall in the south of Joburg last week.

It's understood that unknown gunmen opened fire killing Joala and wounding the city's chief whip, Sthembiso Zungu.

Family spokesperson Liabo Sethu told Eyewitness News this week that they knew his life was in danger after he was provided with a security detail by the water utility.

"There was some sensitive things I'm sure he would not have shared with the family to make sure that he protects them. You can imagine when you have young children and a wife you don't want to spook them to say the reason I have a bodyguard is because my life is in danger."

Police have yet to make any arrests.
