JOHANNESBURG - Police have launched a manhunt for suspects who killed an Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) ward councillor and a schoolchild in KwaZulu-Natal. 

According to officials, the Nongoma Local Municipality councillor was ambushed on the R618 on Wednesday afternoon while attending to a broken-down vehicle. 

It's alleged the suspects stopped next to his car and shot him.

Stray bullets from the shooting hit a passing scholar transport vehicle, killing one pupil and leaving two others injured.

Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said all available resources were allocated to the case.

"The National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS), General Fannie Masemola, has deployed the National Task Team responsible for investigating political killings to the Nongoma area. The National Commissioner has also ordered the mobilisation of maximum resources to apprehend those behind this incident," Mathe said.
