CoCT say expansion of MyCiti bus service will resume after extortion attempts

CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town says work on the MyCiti bus service construction project along AZ Berman Drive in Mitchells Plain will resume soon.

The project came to standstill at the end of February after extortion syndicates threatened contractors and their workers.

The city's mayoral committee member for mobility Rob Quintas said individuals associated with five so-called development and business forums in the Mitchells Plain area forced the contractor off site on 28 February.

But, he added that the city has now been granted an urgent interdict against any person who attempts to delay construction at the site.

"I want to make it very clear that anyone who contravenes this interdict will be arrested and prosecuted. The city will not succumb to threats or attempts to extort money from us or our contractors. We are committed to delivering services to Capetonians and will do whatever is necessary to ensure our infrastructure projects remain on course."

Quintas said one of this is a key MyCiti bus route.

The project will see the widening of AZ Berman Drive between the intersections with the R300 and Wespoort Drive to accommodate two dedicated bus lanes along this stretch.
