Listen below.
Stomach bugs can be either viral or bacterial, with both requiring treatment.
“If it is caused by a bacteria then we can go ahead and prescribe a course of antibiotics. In the case of it being caused by a virus, the only thing we can do is supportive therapy – treating the signs and symptoms.”
Alex de Voux, epidemiologist and UCT senior lecturer
The key symptom is severe diarrhea, which is particularly common in young people and those with weak immune systems.
Other symptoms include the inability to keep any liquids down and a persistent high fever, which can lead to dehydration.
“It will be necessary to seek medical assistance in order to combat severe dehydration.”
Alex de Voux, epidemiologist and UCT senior lecturer
To avoid catching the bug, de Voux recommends practicing good hygiene, and regularly washing your hands.
If you do have a family member who has a stomach bug, implement isolation practices.
