Bongani Bingwa speaks to Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa spokesperson, Andiswa Makanda.

Listen below.

While Johannesburg Park Station is one of the biggest stations in the country, its current state is of great concern to the community.

Concerns for safety, a lack of cleanliness, and a lack of all-around maintenance have been echoed over the years.

Makanda says Prasa, who operates the station, has taken strides to improve the station as well as mitigate some of its challenges by way of upgrades.

She adds that the bus terminal has been “ear-marked” for revamp after being vandalised a few years ago.

“We’ve started to restore Park Station into a world-class station where we have retail [and] transport. We are trying to build a destination station where people can live, work and play.”

Makanda notes Prasa can only operate within Park Station, what happens outside of the station is not within its jurisdiction.

“Whether it is the taxi ranks, or informal trading, that is not in our jurisdiction. You find people park outside Park Station and say they were almost robbed… we always encourage people to park inside Park Station because we have increased security.”
